Check These Car Features Regularly To Stay Safe

Taking care of your car or whoever’s car you are driving is just part of being able to tote yourself around. If you purchase a car or have one given to you, the car is yours. You take on the responsibility to check on certain features to make sure they are running the way that they should be. If you forget to do this, your car may not last as long as it should and it could cause you to experience some unsafe driving experiences. A car that is not running the way that it should be is more prone to accidents or breakdowns.

If you are borrowing or driving someone else’s car it is important that you check and make sure the car is in good shape before you drive it and that you return the car to the owner in a condition better than you found it. Especially if you plan on borrowing it again. Even extremely experienced drivers are not natural mechanics and people that have been driving for decades may not know what features on their car they should regularly have checked for maintenance and safety.

Here are a few reminders for all of us, new drivers or old drivers, of car features we should check or have checked regularly:

Your oil. This can easily be checked by looking under the hood of your car.  Look at your car’s dipstick and check to see whether or not the level is between the minimum and maximum level noted on the dipstick. You can level off your oil if it is necessary and if you are unsure what to do, you can call or drop by a mechanic to see what they recommend. They are always helpful and ready to give you advice.

Your tires. Check the owner’s handbook of your car to see what the recommended tire pressure is. You can check this and adjust the pressure of your tires at a gas station air pump or mobile air pump if you happen to have one. Your tire tread is also extremely important to the maintenance and safety of your tires. Make sure your tires have enough grip and tread by using the coin test.

Coolant. While this is a feature usually checked by mechanics, you do have the ability to check it yourself. Coolant is what helps your car not overheat while driving. If the level gets too low, your car could get too hot. You can check it yourself, but make sure your engine is off and cooled off before you do so. It should be between a minimum and maximum level just like your oil.

Your lights. Your lights are vital to your safety and the safety of those driving around you. When you are in the car, you can not always see if every light is working correctly. Take the time to check every rear and front light to see if a bulb needs to be replaced.

Brake Fluid. Brakes are vital to your safety. Regularly check the fluid or have your brakes and the fluid checked by a professional.

Having a car is no simple feat. They are complex machines that have to be maintained and taken care of to ensure safety and longevity. Regularly checking these car features can save you a significant amount of time and money down the road.
