Taking the big test and getting your license at 16 or 17 is a rite of passage for many teenagers. It’s fun to be able to go where you want when you want, but it also is a symbol for growing up and becoming more independent. Getting your license begins the process of learning how to do big things your parents always did for you. It gives you the chance to learn an important skill, make decisions on your own, and become a more autonomous individual. It’s extremely fun and exciting, but it is also an important part of social and emotional development.
The exciting part of getting your license and being able to go where you want means you can go to the mall or see a movie whenever you feel like it. You also get to invite whoever you want to come with you. There doesn’t have to be a parent or adult present when you transition from your permit to your license, so that leaves more room for the friends you want to invite.
And although getting to go on your adventures with your friends is fun, exciting, and an important right of passage, it also comes with some cautionary tips new drivers should keep in mind. By all means, go see a movie with your friends. You got your license because you studied and worked hard to become a competent enough driver to excel through the test. But — be sure to keep some things in mind as you begin exploring with your friends:
-Put EVERYONE’s safety first. This includes you and every single person sitting in the car. When you are the driver and you have friends sitting in the car with you, you assume responsibility for their safety. That is just part of the responsibility that you take on as you become an independent driver. Make sure you and EVERYONE else in the car have their seatbelt properly fastened. Follow the road rules to a T. Stop at stop signs. Follow the speed limit. Put your cell phone away and avoid distractions. Keep you and your friends safe.
-Do not try to show off and choose your passengers wisely. Maybe avoid driving around friends from school that you do not know well. You cannot predict what other people might pressure you to do. Do not try and show off by being a “laid back” or “the cool” driver. Dangerous activity is never cool and it is OK for you to stand by your safety rules. It does not make you lame or uncool. If someone wants to ride in your car, they have to wear their seatbelt, avoid distracting the driver and follow any other rules you decide to put in place to keep your friends safe.
-Be confident in yourself. You passed the test and you got a license. You deserve this chance to show the world how great and safe of a driver you can be. Hesitancy and a lack of confidence can impede your ability to drive well. Be confident in your ability to safely drive yourself and your friends around. Second-guessing yourself can have consequences and you do not need to second guess yourself. If you are following rules, being safe, and have chosen good friends to drive with, be confident and keep your eyes on the road. You’ll be fine.
