When you begin learning the ways of the road, you not only have to develop skills specific to driving a car, but you also have to learn the rules of the road. The rules of the road are usually dictated by signs, stoplights, and lines on the road. Many signs either say or dictate what needs to happen when you come across them and most people already know what red, yellow, and green stoplights mean before they learn how to drive. But what about those lines on the road? They’re not usually dictated with words, so you have to know what they mean before you come across them on the road. Sometimes, the different colors and different spacings may be a little confusing when you are first learning to drive. Let’s break road markings or pavement lines down:
There are two typical colors. Yellow and white.
Yellow typically means that traffic on either side of the line is going the opposite way. Outside of turning lanes or arrows, stay on your side of the yellow lane to stay out of collisions. You may typically cross a yellow line if you are turning left.
White lines mean that traffic on either side of the line is going the same way. Solid white lines can be used to show different lanes going the same way or they can be used to show a shoulder or turning lane. Dotted lines are typically used to distinguish between lanes going the same way on a multi-lane road.
Now that we have the color basics covered, here are some details and different variations of lines that create more driving scenarios:
-If there are only two lanes and a double yellow line in the middle, traffic on either side is going opposite ways and you may not pass this double yellow line unless you need to turn left and turning left is permitted.
-If there are two lanes, a double yellow line in the middle, but one of them is dotted, those on the side with the dotted yellow line may use the other lane to pass in their lane. If you are driving in the direction with the solid yellow line on your side, passing is not permitted.
-If there is a double yellow line in the middle and dotted with white lines on either side, that means there are multiple lanes of traffic going both ways, on either side of the yellow line. You may pass over the dotted white lines.
If you come across these lines, you can use these tips and your common sense to decide what is permitted on these roads. If there is a center turning lane and the solid line is on your side of the road, but an arrow saying you can turn, you can certainly pass the solid line at that point and turn.
Follow the line rules, watch oncoming traffic, and watch the cars in front of you.
